This detailed view of a cross-section through an ivy leaf shows the sponge parenchyma, the under epidermis and the connections between the stomata and the intercellular cavities. One stoma has been sectioned transversely, while the other has been cut longitudinally. This happens because in most dicots like ivy, stomata are distributed in all directions in the underepidermis.
