Cross-section through a dicot root with secondary growth. The fascicular cambium has developed between xylem and phloem, forming to the inner side new xylem elements and to the outer side new phloem tissue. In the outer layers of the pericycle cork cambium is formed that gives rise to cork. As a consequence all tissues located outside the pericycle, that is endodermis and cortex of the root, degenerate.
