The vacuole of the upper cell (A) is filled with anthocyanes, a common feature in epidermal cells of red onions. The boundary of nucleus, cytoplasmic strands and single organelles is clearly visible in these unstained, living cells, thanks to the use of differential interference contrast microscopy as an imaging technique.
