The ray parenchyma contains living cells that enable the (horizontal) transport of nutrients and water. Tracheids are dead cells that play a role in the (vertical) transport of water and dissolved minerals. Pits in the tracheids provide a passage through which water and minerals can be flow from one cell to another.
