The large air cavities at the lower side of the leaf of a water lily contain sclereids. These are fiber-like, branching epidermal cells that make the leaf less attractive to visitors like leaf-eating insects. Therefore the cell lumen is small and the cell walls are strong and thick and exhibit protruding lobes at their surface, which are very hard.
