Leaves of Crassula ovata have cells with large vacuoles and contain much water. This species utilizes the so-called Crassulacean Acid Metabolism. The epidermis is bilayered and the cuticle is relatively thin but a wax layer (shinny surface) gives effective protection. The stomata are not sunken.
