The natural resource Nijmegen - Groesbeek - Ubbergen - Beek - Berg en Dal
Typical for the nature on the Duivelsberg, in the Eversbos, the Filosofendal, the Heerlijkheid-Beek, the Bruuk and along the Kabouterroute, springs and brooks is the hilly glacial till landscape. There is a large variety of beautiful sceneries in this natural resource:
&nbps;
- Steep woody slopes (e.g. the Duivelsberg (the Devil's hill), the Eversbos and the Kabouterroute (Gnome route: nice for young kids!)
- Deep dales (for Dutch dimensions! e.g. the Filosofendal, the Philosophers' Dale)
- Springs and brooks (e.g. the stream discharging into the water mill and the pond near the "Wasvrouwtje" (statue of the laundry lady in Beek-Ubbergen)
- Luxuriant fields, meadows and orchards (e.g. in the Heerlijkheid-Beek and the Elyseesche Fields)
- The wet basin "de Bruuk" (See Google map of the Bruuk).
Walking paths wind along picturesque views and vista's, in particular over the
Ooijpolder. This landscape with slopes has been primarily forged by the geological forces processes active during the last two glacial periods (more on the
geology of this ground). But also man has had a substantial impact on the landscape thoughout history. Nowadays, most of the green area has received the status of natural reservation and has been set under the guard of Staatsbosbeheer.
In the area called the Duivelsberg an interesting zonation in the vegetation is observed: trees, shrubs and herbs (more on the
vegetation of the moraine area; in Dutch). Pleasant springs and spring brooks can be found around Nijmegen in areas where ground water reaches the surface in a natural manner, in particular in Ubbergen, Beek, Berg en Dal and Plasmolen. In these wet and rather constant environmental conditions typical spring woods and swamp vegetation florish together with a specific animal life community (more about the
fauna).
